This great new quartet, produced by George Winston, gathers together slack key guitarists George Kuo and Dennis Kamakahi, bassist Martin Pahinui and 'ukulele player David Kamakahi, Dennis' nineteen-year old son. The group lovingly perpetuates the freewheeling kanikapila (play music) approach of their beloved kapuna(elders). This is the coming together of four very talented and well known musicians: Dennis is one of Hawaii's greatest and most prolific songwriters in history, one of the great vocalists and a terrific, traditional style, slack key guitarist. George is another of the great slack key guitarists, and is most well known for creating instrumental arrangements of traditional and standard Hawaiian songs. Martin is one of the great vocal stylists (being one of Gabby Pahinui's sons) and is a solid accompaning bassist. David is one of the best young 'ukulele players around, inspired by his mentor Eddie Kamae, and is carrying on with his unique 'ukulele innovations. I like the happy feeling of this CD, it is joyful and the vocals are terrific. The 'ukulele solos by David on the vocal selections are awesome.
