Over the years their albums have won them world wide recognition and many Na Hoku Hanohano awards. (Hokus are like Grammys) Famous usually for their exquiste harmonies and traditional Hawaiian songs rather than songs sung in English, they do a fabulous job here. I would heartily recommend this CD to anyone. While there are literally hundreds of popular hapa haole songs, these songs bring back the memories of the days of "Hawaii Calls". (Hapa Haole literally means half-foreign) The Makaha Sons have chosen some of my old hula favorites here. These popular hapa haole songs were recognized as Hawaiian although they were written in English, were usually about a Hawaiian subject and incuded a Hawaiian word or two. These types of songs launched the careers of Alfred Apaka, Ed Kenney, Don Ho, Nina Keali`iwahamana and others and helped put Hawaii on the musical map. These are the "classics" of the 30's and 40's, the songs we know and love and although the songs been recorded by many entertainers, I find this CD to be a real delight. They have a special quality to their voices and a very Hawaiian way in which they present their music - whether it is in Hawaiian or in English.
